PTL 2025-02-17

We start our meetings by mentioning the project's Antitrust Policy, which you can find linked from the LF and project websites. The policy is important where multiple companies, including potential industry competitors, are participating in meetings. Please review and if you have any questions, please contact your company legal counsel. Members of the LF may contact Andrew Updegrove at the firm Gesmer Updegrove LLP, which provides legal counsel to the LF.

      • got input from Ramesh Murugan Iyer for Policy (Thanks!!!),  and Toine Siebelink plans to provide his input for CPS

      • Ramesh's input for Policy:

        • Ericsson's new SMO offering is known as EIAP (Ericsson Intelligent Automation Platform) where the non-Real time RIC features in that are provided by EIC (Ericsson Intelligent Controller) component. EIAP aims to provide advanced automation and orchestration capabilities for diverse RAN environments (both traditional and ORAN).

Refer : Intelligent Automation Platform (EIAP)

Policy-clamp component from ONAP Policy Framework plays a major role inside EIC functionality in EIAP. Policy-clamp is responsible for the lifecycle management of rApps in EIC. It works together with EIC adapter microservices for the complete lifecycle management of rApps.

Apart from this, EIAP is also interested to use the opa-pdp component from ONAP's Policy Framework in their coordination-management component . This is at the initial level of discussion at the moment. But opa-pdp has a strong potential to be used in the coordination-management use case.

    • TechMahindra (Deena Mukundan):

      • Tech Mahindra is a services-driven organization that collaborates closely with its customers to deliver tailored technology solutions, enabling them to achieve their desired use cases effectively. In the past, Tech Mahindra has partnered with leading global enterprises, including AT&T, Bell Canada and Telus, to drive innovation and transformation using ONAP. Currently, the company is working with Deutsche Telekom on ORAN (Open Radio Access Network) integration, showcasing its commitment to advancing next-generation network technologies.

      • Tech Mahindra has a highly skilled team with extensive expertise in ONAP. As a founding Platinum member of ONAP, the company has been a significant contributor to its development, actively contributing to multiple components such as DMaaP, DCAE, SO, AAI, APPC, Policy, SDNC, and more.

      • Since its inception, Tech Mahindra has contributed over 370 KLOC to ONAP, reinforcing its leadership in network automation and orchestration. These contributions have supported Telco operators in adopting ONAP for cloud-native workloads and operationalizing deployments across edge and central locations for advanced architectures like vRAN and 5G slicing.

    • Capgemini (Viresh Navalli):

      • Capgemini focusing to transform telecom Network with ONAP

      • Unlocking the full potential of the ORAN Network using ONAP, the leading open-source platform for Service Management and Orchestration (SMO) in the O-RAN ecosystem. ONAP empowers telcos to efficiently manage and optimize Radio Access Network (RAN) components, driving innovation and excellence.

      • Capgemini's deployments and use cases

        • Capgemini use ONAP mainly for RAN FCAPS Management using the SDNR component

        • PM KPIs processing using DCAE (VES collector, PM Mapper, File Collector, etc) , and DMaaP (Message   Router, Data Router)

        • DMaaP MR will be replaced with Kafka in future releases. Capgemini is currently working on this feature based on our discussion with ONAP community

        • CapGemini offers O-RAN compliant CU/DU. Currently, interoperability testing between ONAP based SMO with Capgemini CU/DU is ongoing, to support various features like Provisioning Management, Fault Management, File management, etc.

      • Why does Capgemini choose ONAP

      •  Scalability: Effortlessly manage large-scale RAN deployments, ensuring network grows with business.

      • Flexibility: Embracing multi-vendor environment for interoperability and innovation.

      • Efficiency: Reduce operational complexity and costs with automation and open-source solutions.

      • Future-Ready: Stay ahead of the curve with support for technologies like 5G and edge computing.

  • Huawei, @zhuguanyu , please summarize how Huawei uses ONAP

    • Tata, please summerize how Tata uses ONAP

  • Emphasize the product integration of ONAP

  • Use headlines like: "From Control loops and Intent-based to full AI Orchestration and Management."

  • Highlight security contributions, such as those provided during the OPS 5G project by US Government for Networking slicing

    • Byung-woo Jun plans to add details about ONAP's service mesh and Ingress architecture and implementation

    • Mitre, NSA might be able to provide some info

  • Address past criticisms of ONAP being too large and complex by emphasizing recent efforts, such as "streamlining microservices and modules, archiving legacy software, etc."

    • Byung-Woo Jun explained the ONAP Streamlining Evolution initiative to address these concerns

    • Has gone from a full “platform” to a collection of “network automation components”

ONAP DTF Days 2025

TSC Strategy

@Byung-Woo Jun

PTL input?

Byung-Woo Jun presented the brainstorm at the TSC meeting this week.

Brainstorm:

  • Ensure ONAP core components are focused and operate independently, from build to runtime

    • DT finishes Argo-CD based component independent deployment: @Andreas Geißler

      • Argo-CD /Flux are a DT choice, but ONAP can allow other CDs,

      • DT plans to productize some of the selected ONAP core components early next year in their TNAP production environment

    • Declarative and Intent-based component operations by the Repository-based Network Automation : see the ideas from ONAP Architecture Evolution - 2025.pdf

  • Make ONAP core components more autonomous and ready for use by both ONAP, LF and other external users

    • During New Delhi and Oslo releases, CPS and Policy achieved the OpenSSF Gold Badging status. Kudos to the team!

    • Continue to promote/facilitate other ONAP core components for the Gold Badging status (e.g., UUI, SDNC, A&AI, Portal-NG)

      • @Dan Timoney , @Keguang He @Fiete Ostkamp : are you interested in this Gold Badging?

  • Incorporate more GenAI capabilities and use cases to the ONAP components, and promote the adoption of open-source LLM models and frameworks aligned with LF AI & Data and GenAI Commons

    • Collaborate with LF AI & Data GenAI Commons and Nephio GenAI for 5G and 6G

    • Open-source based models and controls
